Wynn Las Vegas Joins The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership
Posted October 29, 2018
Becomes The Largest Hotel Industry Partner In The Nation And The Only Casino Resort In Nevada With This Distinction
LAS VEGAS (October 29, 2018) — Wynn Las Vegas marks a new renewable energy milestone with its acceptance into the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Green Power Partnership, a collective of organizations that are voluntarily leading the innovation, production and use of green energy in America. The distinction comes less than five months after the debut of the Wynn Solar Facility, a new 160-acre solar complex solely dedicated to generating renewable energy to power the Las Vegas resort.

Combined with 103,000 square feet of on-site rooftop solar panels, Wynn Las Vegas is creating and using more than 45 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, which is enough green power to meet 25 percent of the resort’s electric load. According to the U.S. EPA, this is equivalent to the annual electricity use of more than 4,000 average American homes. Based on this finding, Wynn Las Vegas becomes the largest Green Power Partner in the hotel industry in the nation, and the only casino resort in Nevada on the list. Additionally, Wynn Las Vegas joins an elite group of Fortune 500® companies that are current Green Power Partners, including Microsoft, Intel, Bank of America, Apple, Johnson & Johnson and Starbucks.

“It is an honor to be recognized by the U.S. EPA for our commitment to protecting our planet’s resources,” said Erik Hansen, Chief Sustainability Officer for Wynn Resorts. “We are proud to be the national leader in green energy use in the hotel industry, proving that integrating large-scale energy efficient measures can be done in a way that only enhances the guest experience.”

Wynn Las Vegas remains dedicated to increasing sustainable design practices, creating and sourcing renewable energy, and exceeding LEED Gold Building Certification standards for projects in Las Vegas as well as Encore Boston Harbor, currently under construction in Everett, Massachusetts.

Wynn Las Vegas Earns New Sustainable Building Certification
Posted July 19, 2018
Documents Commitment To Environmental Efficiency Standards And Green Building Best Practices
LAS VEGAS (July 19, 2018) – Wynn Las Vegas announces that is has earned Four Green Globes for its dedication to creating and maintaining environmentally-friendly buildings, the highest certification given by the Green Building Initiative, a nonprofit organization that stimulates approaches to creating energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable buildings.

To receive Four Green Globes, dozens of key environmental performance metrics were reviewed at both Wynn and Encore covering energy use and efficiency, water conservation, heating and cooling, waste management, emissions and pollution control, and many more. As part of the extensive on-site evaluation process, an independent third party inspected almost eight million square feet of facilities, including all common areas, guest rooms and suites, employee back-of-house areas, mechanical rooms, and exterior spaces.

“We continuously examine every aspect of our resorts in order to protect the environment as much as possible,” said Erik Hansen, Chief Sustainability Officer for Wynn Resorts. “In many cases this can mean developing entirely new systems as solutions, which have served as a roadmap for our future developments and helped redefine green building practices on the Las Vegas Strip.”

The most recent energy advancement was the opening of the Wynn Solar Field in June 2018, a dedicated 160-acre solar energy facility that is offsetting up to seventy-five percent of the resort’s peak power requirements, the largest percentage of renewable energy used by any resort in Las Vegas. The Wynn Solar Field will eventually be used to power the resort’s new 280,000 square foot meetings and convention space expansion with 100% renewable energy.

Wynn Las Vegas Outlines Increased Sustainable Energy Practices At The 2018 Global Meetings Industry Day
Posted April 17, 2018
LAS VEGAS (April 17, 2018) — Leaders from the top resort companies in Las Vegas recently convened for the 2018 Global Meetings Industry Day to share current investments and future advancements that will help Las Vegas remain the number one trade show destination in the country. At the event, Wynn Las Vegas’ Director of Energy Procurement, Erik Hansen, outlined the company’s approach to sustainable energy and eco-friendly meetings and conventions practices after announcing Wynn’s new 280,000 square foot meetings space expansion.

“Our meetings and conventions clients are increasingly concerned about their impact on the environment, prioritizing clean energy use, responsibly supplying and using data, and recycling,” said Hansen. “Knowing this has served as a roadmap for us to implement several large-scale programs that satisfy these needs without sacrificing even the smallest detail of our five-star service.”

NEW MEETINGS AND CONVENTIONS SPACE
The Las Vegas meetings and conventions industry generates more than $12.4 billion in economic impact, and welcomes more than 6.6 million business travelers annually. To serve this need, Wynn has combined design, technology, and sustainability when conceiving its new state-of-the-art luxury meetings and conventions development, debuting in March 2020. The new complex is an oasis in the middle of the desert, built on repurposed land that was previously the Wynn golf course, and will be adjacent to a 25-acre lagoon, a first for Las Vegas.

The grand rotunda entrance will lead to 18 new thoughtfully scaled rooms ideal for a variety of uses from small receptions to general sessions, highlighted by sunlit promenades and oversized terraces. Unique to this development is a one-of-a-kind 20,000 square foot outdoor events pavilion surrounded by natural beauty, and a remarkably engineered 83,000 square foot pillar-less ballroom.

DEDICATED SOLAR ENERGY CAPABILITIES
The new space will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy sourced from the 160-acre Wynn Solar Energy Facility, making this one of the most eco-friendly developments in Las Vegas and an industry first for a gaming operator in Nevada. The resort will begin receiving power in the first half of 2018 from the facility which will be used to offset up to seventy-five percent of its current meetings and conventions peak power requirements until the expansion opens.

Combined with the recently installed solar panels covering 103,000 square feet of Wynn’s convention space rooftop, enough renewable energy will be generated to power 5,056 homes and eliminate 33,734 metric tons of CO2 emissions from the environment annually.

PROVIDING GREEN DATA
Wynn’s information technology infrastructure, housed at Switch, is powered by 100 percent renewable energy. This means that clients have access to reliable data capabilities in their on-site business centers, and can support hundreds of laptops and thousands of personal phones, with no impact on the environment. Switch was able to retire over 835 geothermal and solar renewable energy credits in 2016, and expects to retire over 850 in 2017, on behalf of Wynn Las Vegas. Independently tracked and verified, each renewable energy credit is proof that one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was generated from an eligible renewable energy resource and delivered to the energy grid.

SINGLE-STREAM RECYCLING AND ASSET RECOVERY
Wynn has implemented a wet-waste single-stream recycling program used to capture the value of a variety of materials at once. This method collects and sorts food and landscape waste, as well as recyclables such as paper, plastic, and cardboard. The reclaimed materials are repurposed for various commodity streams or used as sustainable food sources for local farm animals. The practice also reclaims items that have been inadvertently discarded, like flatware, dinnerware, glassware, linens and more, keeping them from entering landfills.
Wynn Las Vegas Powers Its Data With 100 Percent Sustainable Energy
Posted April 5, 2018
LAS VEGAS (April 5, 2018) — Wynn Las Vegas is pleased to announce that its IT infrastructure, housed at Switch’s Core Campus data center in Las Vegas, is being powered by 100 percent renewable energy. This is the latest step in Wynn’s ongoing effort to reduce its carbon footprint and increase clean energy use across multiple areas of the resort.

“Switch shares the same commitment to protecting our planet’s resources, and provides us with smart and eco-friendly energy solutions as the resort continues to grow,” said Erik Hansen, Director of Energy Procurement for Wynn Las Vegas. “Working with the world’s highest-rated and greenest data center allows us to responsibly scale our IT framework while ensuring that no harm is being done to the environment.”

“We are pleased that Switch’s commitment to clean energy aligns with our important clients like Wynn Las Vegas,” said Adam Kramer, Switch EVP of Strategy. “Having their data running in our data centers helps Wynn achieve its own sustainability goals.”

The news comes on the heels of Wynn’s latest major advancements in clean energy use, including the installation of 103,000 square feet of solar panels on its rooftop, and the debut of the Wynn Solar Facility, a new 160-acre solar complex located in Fallon, Nevada.

Dedicated solely to Wynn Las Vegas, the Wynn Solar Facility offsets up to 75 percent of the resort’s peak power requirements. This is the largest percentage of renewable energy used by any resort in Las Vegas, and an industry first for a gaming operator in Nevada. The Facility will eventually power Wynn’s newest 280,000 square foot meetings and conventions expansion with 100 percent renewable energy, making it one of the most environmentally conscious developments in Las Vegas.

Wynn Las Vegas remains committed to increasing sustainable design practices, creating and sourcing renewable energy, and exceeding LEED Gold Building Certification standards for projects in Las Vegas as well as Wynn Boston Harbor, currently under construction in Everett, Massachusetts.

Wynn Las Vegas Introduces Solar Energy Facility That Will Enable Future Development, Paradise Park, To Run On 100 Percent Renewable Energy
Posted January 25, 2018
Video of the solar project is available here: https://youtu.be/5E_UPFsbowM
LAS VEGAS (Jan. 25, 2018) — Wynn Las Vegas will power its multi-use development, Paradise Park, with 100 percent renewable energy sourced from a new 160-acre solar energy facility, making it one of the most environmentally conscious planned developments in Las Vegas.

Under the terms of the agreement with Enel Green Power North America, Inc. (EGPNA), Wynn Las Vegas will begin receiving power in the first half of 2018 which will be used to offset up to seventy-five percent of the resort’s current peak power requirements until Paradise Park opens. This is the largest percentage of renewable energy used by any resort in Las Vegas, and an industry first for a gaming operator in Nevada.

Owned and operated by EGPNA, The Wynn Solar Facility is a stand-alone solar photovoltaic project located in Fallon, Nevada adjacent to the existing award-winning Stillwater hybrid facility, and will share the existing connection infrastructure with the geothermal-solar hybrid plant. The Wynn Solar Facility will generate up to 27 MWdc of renewable energy, equivalent to 20 MWac, to power the resort. With this renewable energy resource offsetting such a sizable percentage of Wynn’s peak power needs, the resort will far exceed requirements outlined in the Nevada Renewable Portfolio Standard.

“Nevada is the national leader in geothermal and solar generation per capita and our gaming and tourism industries are second to none,” said Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval. “The partnership between Enel Green Power and Wynn’s Paradise Park is the merging of the Silver State’s growing renewable energy industry and gaming, one of our state’s oldest industries. This is a meaningful step in Nevada’s energy future and I am grateful that these companies worked together to use the state’s renewable energy resources for the benefit of Nevada companies and our environment.”

Combined with the recently installed solar panels covering 103,000 square feet of Wynn’s rooftop, enough renewable energy will be generated to power 5,056 homes and eliminate 33,734 metric tons of CO2 emissions from the environment annually.

Wynn Las Vegas is committed to increasing sustainable design practices, creating and sourcing renewable energy, and exceeding LEED Gold Building Certification standards for projects in Las Vegas as well as Wynn Boston Harbor, currently under construction in Everett, Massachusetts.
